Transforming secondary education: Lessons from Uganda

In April 2024, GSF hosted a diverse group of practitioners and experts from eight countries for the Secondary Education Study Tour in Uganda, themed ‘Strengthening secondary schooling is key to fulfilling the promise made to young people’.

While the challenge is far greater than any single organisation to tackle on its own, we were introduced to incredible pockets of innovative solutions available across our contexts. Key takeaways that we collectively embraced to strengthen secondary education included: shift in mindset to optimally use locally available resources, proactively involving the community, and consciously curating partnerships with local government.  Visits included schools run by GSF community members - PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools), Building Tomorrow, and School For Life.

The GSF Study Tour was very useful to me. (Strongly agree and agree).

The togetherness and informal space really warmed us up to each other and ensured that important conversation flew openly. Understanding a whole new country's complex socio-economic and political context and then understanding how something as crucial as ensuring all children get the access and quality that they deserve was truly eye-opening and I'm so grateful for all the paths that I crossed.

As an actor in the sector, one needs to bring up the discussions and put on the table, share what is possible and what kind of support should be provided. We are positive that the discussions going forward are going to be constructive, and the non-state actors will unite and come up with a collective voice.
